Internet lesson 5 - homework

Try to avoid doing the homework in the last minute but rather do them in time and email them to bluelight.training@gmx.com. Please do not use the bluelight@auroville.org.in address.

Here we go again. Now repeat the phising test and see for yourself. Go to http://www.sonicwall.com/phishing/ and follow the instructions to do the Phishing test. How many of the 10 examples could you identify correctly this time?

Download Flash block

Add-ons extend Firefox, letting you personalize your browsing experience. Take a look around and make Firefox your own.

Exercise(s)/Question

Open Firefox and type search.live.com into the location bar.

In the live search engine search for firefox addons.

Then go to the Firefox add-ons web page - first link.

Type flash into the search field and have a look at the results.

Find flashblock and install it. Read the pop-up window carefully. What are you warned about?

Restart Firefox when you are asked to do so.

Close the configuration window if it pops up and proceed.

Then type netaffinity in the location bar. Is the advertisement blocked? What do you have to do to see it?

Add the PDF Download add-on to your Firefox.

Then go to auroville.org

Go to File/Save page as PDF and save it onto your Desktop.

Minimise Firefox and open the PDF file you just saved.

Firefox Themes

A Firefox theme is a plug-in to change the look and feel of Firefox. Firefox provides you with lots of options to customise the look and feel as well as the functionality.

Exercise(s)/Question

Open Google and search for Firefox themes.

Open the first 3 search results in tabs and have a look.

Find and download the walnut theme.

Where do you choose which theme you want to use? Change the theme to Walnut and have a look.

Now you know how to change the way Firefox looks on your computer. There is much to explore ...

Hundreds of Search Engines

Access your favorite search engines quickly from the integrated search bar. You can use a new engine for each search, or stick to your favorite.

Exercise(s)/Question

Choose from the present drop down list of engines in the integrated web search bar and select manage search engines. Take some time and have a look.

Then go to get more search engines and install the Flickr search engine. Do you remember what Flickr was?

Use the Flickr integrated search engine and search for auroville.

Extensions, themes, languages and plug-ins

Exercise(s)/Question

In Firefox under Tools/Add-ons you find lots of options around extensions, themes, languages and plug-ins.

Take some time and have a look.

Disable your Flashblock plug-in and visit netaffinity.

Then enable it and and go back to netaffinity.

Change your theme back to the default one.

Have a look at the TOP 100 integrated search engines in the Mycroft Project. Try to install some of them into your Firefox integrated web-search. In the left pane open TOP100 in a new tab and have a look.
Then go back and open search in the left pane in a new tab and browse a bit through the categories - so many search engines!

Install the Firefox DownloadHelper add-on and try to download a YouTube video. Use the right click and browse through the options.

Install an add-on called CustomizeGoogle . In Firefox go to Tools/add-ons/CustomizeGoogle/Preferences . On the left you see all kinds of Google related web content. Click on each and have a look what options you have on the right side. If you see somewhere remove ads tick it.
Then restart Firefox and google around. You don't see any ads any more!
